Hotel staff jailed for embezzlement


Staff at a local hotel were sentenced to nine months in prison on Tuesday by the district court after pleading guilty to embezzling 500 BND from hotel guest deposits.

Norain binti Abdul Rani, 35, was also ordered to compensate 500 BND or serve another week in prison in the event of default.

Deputy Prosecutor Dayangku Didi-Nuraza binti Pengiran Haji Abdul Latiff revealed in court that the accused, who worked on a temporary basis and worked shifts, went to work at 10 p.m. on December 10 and had completed his shift. work at 7 am the next day.

As she entered to work at the Kampong Mumong ‘A’ hotel in Kuala Belait, a colleague she was replacing handed the money to the accused. She recorded the amount received and kept it in a safe. However, at 3:25 a.m. on December 11, the defendant took 500 BND.

She then deposited the money into someone else’s bank account using an ATM machine.

She returned to finish her shift and was replaced by another colleague at 6 a.m.

She rushed off without giving the money properly.

The defendant’s colleague checked the cash journal, counted the money and found that the amount did not match.

The hotel’s operations manager was alerted who then filed a police report.
