Industry creatives gather in Adelaide for Design Inn 2022

Over 250 of the industry’s most creative minds attended the Design Inn Symposium at SkyCity Adelaide on Tuesday May 3, ahead of the 2022 Australasian Hospitality Industry Conference and Exhibition (AHICE).

Leading architects, designers, hoteliers, owners and key suppliers discussed key trends in hotel design and development through masterclasses, keynotes, panel discussions and project presentations, as well as tours sites in the city and networking events.

Key Design Inn 2022 sessions included ‘=The New Design Rules, moderated by Chada Partner and Creative Director Juliet Ashworth, covered hot trends including art, food and drink, post-pandemic trends and Moreover.

Wellness in Hospitality, moderated by Reece Brand Ambassador Manager Loren Inglis, discussed the wellness design trends that are setting the benchmark for 2022 and beyond.

During this session, speakers discussed everything from sustainable stays to daily hygiene and the guest wellness journey.

“As hotel designers, I think it’s essential that we design a healthy, relaxing and safe space for guests that truly enhances physical and mental well-being,” said Richard Dalman, CEO of Dalman Architecture.

Dalman discussed using open architecture to create a comfortable and safe space for guests.

“A lot of our hotels are sealed boxes, we don’t really relate to the environment,” he explained.

“If we can kind of break down the zones and start getting a little bit closer to nature, I think that’s a good thing. We can bring plants inside, we can begin to connect the inside to the outside world.

Meanwhile, DKO’s Director of Architecture, Michael Drescher, discussed the little things that matter to guests – from shower pressure to lavender stations, connecting to apps and noise-canceling headphones for purposes. meditation, the possibility of ordering a Peloton bike in your room and being able to bring your pet during your stay.

“It’s all of those things for bedrooms that I think we’re really going to look at because it helps make sure you stay warm — it’s like being at home,” Drescher said.

Designing with Country was a big topic of discussion at Design Inn with speakers. “Indigenous artists have a very particular understanding of space, and there’s a cultural sensitivity that we certainly don’t understand. I think in my childhood and after working with First Nations for the last 10 years, I had a glimpse of that,” he said.

“I think it’s really important when you go into this design brief, to have that Indigenous voice. If you really want to engage with them, you have to work collaboratively and get out of your culture – as hard as that may be – and stop and listen to what’s being said.

In a keynote session, representatives from Scott Carver and FCAD Principal Consultant and Creator Matthew Fellingham discussed the topic that was fundamental to the design competition process for 197 Church Street, Parramatta.

The popular Boutique Placemakers returned this year, hosted by Rachel Luchetti, Director of Luchetti Krelle. This session looked at how boutique operators are approaching the “next normal” from a design perspective within their brands.

During this session, Lancemore Group CEO Julian Clark discussed the Group’s hotel design essentials and influencing factors.

“We draw inspiration from a design perspective of four different [areas] – one is our brand, the other is the architecture of the hotel, the other is the climate where the hotel is located and the other is the vision we have for the hotel,” explained Clark.

“Each hotel, design-wise, has a good dose of individuality. We think, from a brand perspective, it gives us a cohesive experience…our brand is really about the experience for the guest .

Sustainability in Design curated by WMK Architectural Director – Client Services, Guy Blunden, looked at how sustainability needs to be at the forefront from planning to construction and opening; while ‘Hotel Chains’ Technical Insights’, hosted by Scott Carver Director Angela Biddle, unveiled key trends from some of the industry’s leading in-house design, engineering and technical managers.

The event also featured project presentations on QT Newcastle, AC Hotel by Marriott Melbourne Southbank, Melbourne Marriott Hotel Docklands, HotelMotel Adelaide and InterContinental Parramatta as well as in-person site visits of Sofitel Adelaide and EOS by SkyCity Adelaide.
