Key appointments: W Sydney, QT Queenstown, Peninsula and more

The latest roundup of new appointments this week (December 16) includes new positions at W Sydney, QT Queenstown, The Peninsula Istanbul and Cora Cora Maldives.

W SYDNEY

Marriott International, announced the appointment of the industry leader Roxanne Markovine as Director of Sales and Marketing for his exciting new property, W Sydney, which is slated to open in November 2022.

Markovina joins W Sydney General Manager Craig Seaward as a key member of the management team that will lead the hotel’s pre-opening and opening in 2022.

She previously led sales, marketing, events and reservations for W Brisbane, which spearheaded the return of the W brand to Australia when it opened in June 2018.

“I am delighted to participate and lead the sales and marketing for the launch of this amazing new W, the largest in the world,” she said.

“With its bold design and unique conception of W luxury, the W Sydney will transform the Darling Harbor district and disrupt and ignite the Sydney hotel landscape.”

QT QUEENSTOWN

QT Queenstown has appointed Jonathan williams as a chef through its renowned food and drink offerings, Bazaar Marketplace, Reds Bar and Lil Red restaurant.

Williams, who served as Executive Chef at Rātā in Queenstown for almost four years, brings a wealth of culinary expertise to the role and a simple, well-made food philosophy, a perfect complement to Executive Chef Ryan Henley.

Williams, who has worked at Michelin-starred restaurants, including an intern at Heston Blumenthal’s Fat Duck, says the opportunity to work with Henley is what drew him to the position.

“I respect Ryan’s ethics and approach to working with quality products from local suppliers,” he said. “I look forward to the opportunity to collaborate with Ryan, as well as the freedom and the ability to do something a little different.”

ISTANBUL PENINSULA

The Peninsula Hotels announced the appointment of Jonathan crook as Managing Director of The Peninsula Istanbul, effective January 24, 2022.

Currently Managing Director of The Peninsula New York since 2011, Crook’s tenure with The Peninsula Hotels spans over 20 years.

Prior to his appointment to The Peninsula New York, Crook held key leadership positions at other Peninsula locations in Asia and North America.

For over two years, Crook was General Manager of The Peninsula Manila and prior to that he served as Hotel Manager of The Peninsula Tokyo, Resident Manager of The Peninsula Beijing and Food and Beverage Manager at The Peninsula Chicago.

Prior to joining The Peninsula Hotels, Crook spent several years in the management teams of other luxury properties, including The Dorchester in London and The Sonnenalp Resort in Vail, Colorado.

Born and raised in the UK, Crook spent his formative years in Portugal, Zambia, Montserrat and Egypt, before receiving a Senior National Diploma in Hospitality and Institutional Management from Gloucestershire University in Cheltenham.

“I am extremely honored to lead the team of this incredible project in Istanbul, where the old and the new meet,” he said.

“I have no doubts that the unprecedented Turkish culture combined with the unrivaled standard of hospitality of The Peninsula hotels will become the hallmark of The Peninsula İstanbul once we start welcoming guests next year.

In addition to Crook’s new post, The Peninsula Hotels revealed Rolf buehlmann will be named the new Managing Director of The Peninsula New York.

Having recently served as Vice President, Operations and Room Quality, Buehlmann will take up his role in early 2022.

CORA CORA MALDIVES

Cora Cora Maldives has announced the appointment of Justin swart as General Manager of the new luxury all-inclusive property located in Raa Atoll.

Born in South Africa, Justin Swart has over 15 years of experience in the luxury hospitality industry, including being part of the team at Siam @ Siam Design Hotel Bangkok, STAY Wellbeing and Lifestyle Resort, the Royal President Hotel and the Kingston Suites Hotel, part of the Kingston Hotel Group.

Justin began his career in the hospitality industry as Director of Sports and Recreation and quickly gained experience as Director of Pre-Opening Sales and Director of Hotels and Wellness in Resorts. tourism across Thailand.
